If you're an adventurer seeking to explore unique rock formations, unearth ancient history, and experience the otherworldly allure of the American Southwest, this is a hike you won't want to miss.
The town of Kanab is a must see also. Like a page out of the past it has retained much of its heritage of the old west. Many movies and tv shows have been filmed on location in Kanab such as The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, Grizzley Adams, Planet of the Apes, The Desperados, Broken Arrow just to name a few of the many. There is a small museum when you enter town that will give you a sense of some of the movie sets of the times.
The Toadstool Hike is conveniently located just off Highway 89, approximately 30 miles from Page and
45 miles from Kanab in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument area. The trailhead is well-marked, making it easily accessible for hikers of all skill levels. The trail itself is relatively short, measuring around 1.5 miles round trip, making it a perfect day excursion for families, solo travelers, and nature enthusiasts.
As you begin your hike, you'll be immersed in a landscape that seems like something out of a sci-fi movie. Towering sandstone cliffs, red rock formations, and the occasional desert flora surround you. But the true marvel of this hike is the Toadstool Hoodoos – peculiar mushroom-shaped rock formations sculpted by the patient hand of nature.
The Toadstools are the result of millions of years of erosion. Soft, sedimentary rock layers have been carved away by wind and water, leaving behind these incredible pillars of stone. They are a testament to the geologic wonders that define the American Southwest. Continue past the first two Hoodoos turning to the left walking about 200 yards you will find an area where the sand forms an almost snow like cascade against the rock ridge ahead. Don’t miss this part of the hike it is truly a spectacle when the sun is shining at a particular angle.
Walking back the opposite way passing the main hoodoos you will find additional hoodoos and more hiking trails. Take the time to explore the area it is quite intriguing.
Wear Sturdy Footwear: The trail can be rocky, so wearing comfortable and supportive hiking boots or shoes is essential.
Stay Hydrated: The desert climate can be unforgiving. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during hot months.
Sun Protection: Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from the sun's intense rays.
Respect the Environment: Help preserve this delicate ecosystem by staying on designated trails and respecting all posted regulations.
As you explore the Toadstool Hike, you'll also find yourself surrounded by the remnants of ancient history. Petroglyphs etched into the sandstone offer a glimpse into the lives and stories of the indigenous people who once called this area home. Take time to admire and reflect on these incredible pieces of human history.
Sunset Magic
While the Toadstool Hike is a beautiful adventure during the day, it becomes even more enchanting at sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the red rocks glow with an ethereal radiance, and the Toadstools cast long shadows, creating a surreal and almost magical atmosphere. Be sure to time your visit to witness this captivating transformation.
